The oldest part is in Rožna dolina which is the best known among students. There are 14 dormitories there that are mainly renovated or upgraded. In addition to the dormitories the small area also contains a kindergarten, parks, playgrounds for students and children, car parks, a nice avenue planted with trees, a restaurant, a community health centre and the famous Radio Študent. Rožna dolina is one of the most beautiful parts of Ljubljana with the breath taking park Tivoli, the city hill Rožnik, sports-social centre Mostec and the ZOO nearby. It only takes a few minutes to reach the city centre on foot where there is a hub of bus connections, where you can find cultural, political and science institutions as well as entertainment.
Two dormitories in Mestni log were constructed in 1984/85 at the end of Ljubljana citizens’ contribution and facilitate the needs of faculties in this part of Ljubljana. The construction is modern and the standard is high which is evident from the large living environment. At the backbone of these dormitories is Dormitory Gerbičeva which rounds the residential area with the nearby dormitory for high school students. In the vicinity there are also sports fields, while the vicinity of Barje also offers nice walks and cycling trips. Bus connections are also good.
During 1979 /1982 four dormitories were constructed with the Ljubljana citizens’ contribution – they are known as A, B, C, D and they gave the area nickname the Alphabet. In addition to these dormitories there is also Dormitory FDV which was first constructed in 1961 and tore down in 2001 due to seismological risk and again constructed in 2006. Upon the merger of Študentskih domovi v Ljubljani and Dom podiplomcev into one comprehensive Institute Študentski dom Ljubljana the building was joined by the building of Dom podiplomcev at Gosarjeva ulica which early stage researchers from Slovenia and abroad reside as well as visiting higher education professors and higher education co-workers at Slovenian faculties and research institutes.
The oldest dormitory is Akademski kolegij (Academic board) which is the work of the renowned architect Jože Plečnik from 1938. It is still in the denationalisation procedure.
