How to prevent coronavirus disease?

Disease COVID-19, which is caused by coronavirus, is quite similar to other respiratory infections, such as flu. The disease is manifested with malaise, fatigue, fever, cough and in severe forms with shortness of breath. Data show that in as many as 80% of the cases, the disease is mild and people get better without complications.
Daily hygiene measures are effective to prevent respiratory infections, including infection with the new coronavirus, but must be carried out consistently:

  • We wash our hands thoroughly and often with soap and water, also after sneezing and/or coughing.
  • If water and soap are not available at the moment, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% ethanol to disinfect your hands.
  • Before coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with handkerchief or cough and sneeze into the upper part of your sleeves and not into your palm.
  • Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands.
  • We avoid close contact with people, who show signs of this infectious disease.
  • If we get sick, we stay at home.
  • In times of an increased number of respiratory infections, we avoid closed spaces, where there are large numbers of people and provide regular aeration of closed spaces.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched (e.g. hooks, countertops, all accessible surfaces of walls and windows, toilet bowl, sink faucets, etc.).

What to do when you suspect that you are infected with coronavirus?

If there are signs suggestive of coronavirus infection, the person with signs of acute respiratory infection (fever, cough, shortness of breath) and who has been in areas where there is an increased risk of coronavirus infection or who has been during this period in contact with the patient who has confirmed coronavirus infections, must go to a separate space or maintain a distance of at least 1.5 meters away from other people. The patient consults the health service via phone (the selected personal physician of the patient during regular working hours, the UKC Ljubljana Emergency Medical Service on (01) 522 45 40/41 or an emergency call 112), where the person will receive instructions on how to proceed.

Do not go to the clinic unannounced, so you would not infect others. The health service is informed of and well prepared for suspected infection with coronavirus.

Also, you are advised to follow the websites and social networks of the National Institute of Public Health (https://www.nijz.si/sl/koronavirus-2019-ncov), which has an open telephone line with the phone number 080 1404 every day between 8 AM and 8 PM, where an expert for talk and specific questions is available). You can also find useful information on the websites of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As always, we will keep you updated on any further information.
